This contemporary home situated near the beach at Henley in Adelaide needed a modern fence design to define the property and to give it street appeal. The home’s style and design lent itself to a variety of different fence styles, but the owner wanted a minimalist look.
We recommended our Park Key concrete pillars which are a combination of a short minimalist pillar, with a quoin top and a quoin capital, and are 400 x 400 wide. They are simple and modern but the quoin top adds some interest without detracting from the goal.
Council approval not required for concrete pillars under one metre high
Many of our modern fences designs are a minimum height of 1.5 metres, but in this case, the pillar was only one metre high. Council approval is not required for pillar fences under one metre in height so we were able to install this fence within a couple of weeks.
Customise the smaller details to match the home’s design
It’s the little things that count when it comes to making a modern fence design a beautiful complement to a home. The shorter pillars do not dominate this single storey minimalist home, but instead provide a balanced frame around the property. The owner also now has the option of adding a fence infill or not, some shrubs behind the fence may instead be the perfect addition.
We used stainless steel for the letterbox to match the windows and integrated the letterbox into the pillar. We chose flat caps as a pointed cap would have been more striking which would have detracted from the minimalist result. We also chose a wider 400×400 base.
Modern fence designs that are a great complement to a home only happen with the right design advice and a good understanding of the home design and property dimensions, and the streetscape.
The shapes, lines, blocks and angles of the property are all taken into consideration when designing a fence. For example, the wide vertical fence pillars match the high vertical veranda columns. The grounds have geometric designs with some texture and colour, so a simple modern fence design once again does not detract from this.
CastStone’s extensive pre-planning process makes the difference in the end result
Our extensive planning process makes the difference in delivering a fence that is the perfect complement to a home. We take pride in our many years experience installing stunning fences. In the words of our director Rosemary White:
These are the things I look for every time I approach a new property to design a sandstone fence:
- How far the house is set back from the boundary.
- Framing the house by getting the driveway and boundary pillars to be in line with corners and lines.
- The features of the building behind the sandstone fence, we want to design a fence that complements the building.
